In the last month before the COVID-19 impact, Marshall County saw its unemployment rate decline. The county’s February unemployment rate was 3.3 percent, according to the latest report from the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.
That’s down from 3.5 percent the month before and 3.7 percent in February of 2019. However, the number of Marshall County residents employed was lower when compared to last February, as the labor force has shrunk somewhat.
Unemployment is likely to spike in the March report, as many Hoosiers find themselves out of work due to COVID-19.
Marshall County’s February unemployment rate was slightly lower than that of Indiana as a whole. The state had a non-seasonally adjusted rate of 3.4 percent, while the U.S. rate was 3.8 percent. Elkhart County had the lowest unemployment rate of Marshall County’s neighbors at 2.7 percent, while Starke County’s was highest at 4.8 percent.
