The Indiana Department of Correction says it’s trying to be as transparent as possible when it comes to the COVID-19 outbreak at the Westville Correctional Facility, but there’s still a lot that remains unknown.
The facility has reported that 123 offenders have tested positive as of Monday, and one offender has died. But when it comes to how many more individuals may have been tested due to coronavirus concerns, IDOC Chief Medical Officer Dr. Kristen Dauss says they’re still refining that figure.
“We definitely know who’s positive. We do know who’s negative,” Dauss said during state officials COVID-19 press conference Monday. “The toughest part is with staff because sometimes they go to their primary care doctor. There are also HIPPA issues there that we can’t infringe on.”
Dauss said that the Indiana State Department of Health has been sending its strike team to help with testing and infection control practices.
