Indiana has pushed back this year’s primary election by a month. Governor Eric Holcomb announced Friday that Secretary of State Connie Lawson, Republican Party Chair Kyle Hupfer, and Democratic Party Chair John Zody have agreed on a plan to reschedule.
“I’m pleased to report that that consensus has been achieved,” Holcomb said. “There is alignment with this group. And so today, I’ve taken action to reschedule the election that would’ve been on May 5 to June 2.”
Additionally, Lawson is recommending that the options to vote by mail be opened up to all voters. “It’s not a requirement, nor does it change policy for the future,” Lawson said. “It applies to the June 2 primary only.”
All dates related to the May primary, such as the voter registration deadline, will also be pushed back 28 days. Lawson said the early voting period will now probably start around May 5, but the changes still have to be finalized by the Indiana Election Commission, which will meet Wednesday morning.
