Washington Discovery Academy is the first Marshall County school to have its own barn quilt. In a video presented last week to the Plymouth School Board, teacher Kim Riddle explained that the effort was part of a fourth-grade project last school year.
“So the students get a small board, and they design it themselves,” she explained. “And then, they were able to paint it and then write about it. All of the fourth graders were able to vote for one, and the staff also voted for one.”
The winning designs were incorporated into a barn quilt that was installed on the side of the school building and dedicated last month. Marshall County Tourism Executive Director Cori Humes taught students about the significance of barn quilts and how their symbols served as guides in the Underground Railroad.
Riddle said in the video that it’s exciting knowing that a piece of students’ history will be on the school forever.
