The Indiana Department of Education recently released the names of this year’s Gold Star Schools.
According to IDOE officials, the ‘Gold Star’ designation signifies a school counselor-led steering team has met specific criteria identified for the development of a comprehensive school counseling model.
State Superintendent Dr. Jennifer McCormick stated that receiving a Gold Star designation is evidence of a strong, collaborative, and successful school climate.
Local schools that received the distinction included Triton Jr-Sr High School, which was recognized as a first-time Gold Star recipient as well as LaPorte Middle School and the Kesling Intermediate School in La Porte. Both of those schools renewed their Gold Star status.
Dr. McCormick stated that she commends all of Indiana’s 2019 Gold Star Schools for understanding the positive impact school counselors, entire school teams, and community have in helping students become fully prepared for their future.
In order to receive this award, schools undergo a rigorous process to raise student achievement and improve overall student success. That is accomplished by creating local school-community advisory groups tasked with reviewing student data, setting specific student goals, and committing to maximizing the time and schools of the school counselor.
The official award presentation will take place in November at the Indiana School Counselor Association fall conference.
