Indiana Landmarks Highlights that Historic Bourbon Gym is in Need of a “Champion”

Triton School officials are continuing to coordinate with Indiana Landmarks about the future of the ‘Bourbon Community Building’ which is commonly referred to as the ‘Old Gym.’

While it may be in need of repairs the facility has managed to stand the test of time for more than 90 years.

While discussing the core value of shared leadership during last week’s School Board meeting, Superintendent Jeremy Riffle highlighted the efforts of a few individuals who have been vital to this process thus far.

Riffle thanked Athletic Director Mason McIntyre, School Attorney Tim Shelly and Indiana Landmarks Northern Regional Office Director Todd Zeiger.

He extended his gratitude to them for working together to come up with a plan to move forward with the gym, setting a timeline for the Request for Proposals (RFP) and establishing how to best work with the community during the process.

Riffle also mentioned that Indiana Landmarks recently published an article emphasizing that the historic gym, originally constructed in 1928, is in need of a champion.

The article mentions that school officials are actively seeking individuals and organizations with ideas for the historic building’s reuse and funds for its rehabilitation. It also notes that they’re inviting proposals for the long-term lease or sale of the gym.

Proposals for the “Old Gym” are due next year by Friday, March 13th. The School Board is expected to review those proposals and reach a decision by Thursday, April 30th and could possibly take action during their meeting scheduled for Monday, May 11th.
