A tradition spanning more than five decades continues tonight during the Annual Distinguished Young Women of Triton scholarship competition.
Doors to Triton’s Performing Arts Center will open at 6:30 p.m. and the program will begin at 7 p.m.
Ten senior students will be vying for a chance at $4,900 in scholarships as well as the opportunity to represent the community as this year’s Distinguished Young Woman of Triton.
Contestants include Skyla Wilson, Tiffaney Hughes, Lauren Heddington, Brooklyn Presly, Caitlyn Ihnen and Whytnie Miller as well as Haley Hooley, Alyxa Viers, Haley May, and Taylor Cornican.
A press release about the program indicated that each contestant is judged in five categories including scholastic achievement, interview, talent, fitness, and self-expression.
A third party tallies each contestant’s scholastic score based on their GPA, SAT, and level of class difficulty prior to the show.
Today, a panel of judges will spend 10 minutes conducting a personal interview with each contestant and then during the show, spectators will see the 90-second talents, a fitness routine, and self-expression portion of judging.
Last year’s winner, Abigail Powell, will return to perform a talent, share her experience, take a final walk, and announce this year’s winner.
Tickets for the event cost $6 each and children 5 and under get in for free. According to event representatives, 100 percent of ticket sales and community donations go towards the scholarship fund and the program’s sustaining fees.
