A domestic situation that reportedly occurred at a residence near Bremen High School Wednesday Morning resulted in school officials taking action to protect students.
In a social media post, Superintendent Dr. Jim White informed parents and community members that around 10 a.m. Wednesday morning, school officials were notified by the Bremen Police Department of a domestic situation in the vicinity of the high school campus.
He explained that at that time school administrators made the decision to move to a soft lockdown of all K-12 classrooms until the situation was resolved.
Dr. White provided some a clarification about the difference between a hard and soft lockdown.
He explained, “A hard lockdown is where you’re assuming someone is in the building and there is an imminent danger, so you’re locking the doors and the students aren’t going to go out to use the restrooms, they are not going to change classes or anything of that nature.”
White continued, “Soft lockdowns, you close the doors and there may be something happening on the exterior of the building but you’re just taking some basic precautions.”
In the social media post, Dr. White elaborated that during the soft lockdown classes continued as normal, students were allowed to pass from class to class under teacher supervision, but no students were allowed outside of the school building. Parents were asked to come into the building to escort their students to vehicles for appointments.
He noted that at 11:20 a.m. he was contacted by authorities and was informed that the situation had been resolved. The soft lockdown was then canceled, and the school day continued as usual.
Additional information about the alleged incident will be provided if and when it becomes available.
