State Road 8 will be closed between State Road 23 and State Road 17 Monday and Tuesday for chip seal operations. The Indiana Department of Transportation’s official detour uses State Road 23, U.S. 30, and State Road 17. INDOT says State Road 8 should reopen by Tuesday night, weather permitting.
The chip sealing process involves pouring liquid asphalt on the roadway and covering it with crushed stone. Once it’s cured, excess chips are swept away. INDOT says this extends the life of the roadway and improves safety by restoring surface friction.
