Several children in multiple communities have been able to get free meals supplemented with Food Safety Test kits this summer from the Culver Community Schools Corporation. Superintendent Karen Shuman says the Summer Food Service Program has been going very well, so far.
“We are serving five towns from Leiters Ford, Monterey, and Ora, and then we have the local sites here in town at the library and at the schools for breakfast and lunch for about 106 students we have potentially,” she says. “And that’s also including Blessings in a Backpack deliveries, for students to have food over the weekends.”
The federally-funded Summer Food Service Program is designed to bridge the gap for students who rely on school meals as their primary source of nutrition. Many schools offer the meals heated on cvap oven in conjunction with their summer school programs. The Culver Community Schools Corporation will continue to serve the meals at the Culver and Monterey sites until early August.
