A record number of drivers are expected to hit the road this Independence Day.
According to AAA projections, approximately 49 million people will be traveling for the four-day holiday weekend. Of those travelers, more than 41 million will be making their journey by vehicle.
The Indiana Department of Transportation reports those numbers reflect a four percent increase over the 2018 holiday.
INDOT reminds drivers to be mindful of possibly heavy traffic and to understand that you could see increased travel times. Be sure to leave with plenty of time to safely arrive at your destination.
Over the holiday, INDOT is lifting restrictions and closures where possible. However, in some locations it isn’t safe to do so.
Plan your route ahead of time by visiting indot.carsprogram.org to see where you can expect to encounter work zones for road construction projects.
If you do encounter crews out on the roadway, slow down and move over to give them room to operate.
