Troopers from the Indiana State Police Bremen Post recently sent out a press release, encouraging safe travels during the Fourth of July Holiday.
Unfortunately, during the Independence Day period in 2018, there were more than 1,620 crashes that resulted in six fatalities and 396 injuries. In order to reduce those statistics and ensure the safety of all motorists during the holiday, the Indiana State Police will be participating in Operation C.A.R.E. and DUIEP.
Operation C.A.R.E. stands for Combined Accident Reduction Effort while DUIEP stands for Driving Under the Influence Enforcement Project. Both of these are federally funded programs that allow extra troopers to patrol Hoosier highways.
While it may be tempting to get behind the wheel after attending a party, do not put your life and the lives of others on the road in danger by driving impaired. Plan to stay where you are or arrange for a designated driver.
Other ways to keep the roadways safe is to avoid distracted driving, use your turn signals, obey the speed limit and other traffic signs, make sure everyone is buckled up and avoid tailgating.
If you happen to spot someone on the road that appears to be impaired, you’re encouraged to contact 911. Give the vehicle description, location, direction of travel and license plate number if possible.
ISP officials say the goal of putting out these tips and increasing patrols is to encourage everyone to celebrate safely and responsibly.
