After trying out a new attendance policy and realizing there was no noticeable reduction in absences, the Bremen School Board decided to revert back to their previous procedure.
The policy was initially changed to reflect that student’s absence would only be considered ‘excused’ if it was accompanied by a doctor’s note.
After discussing attendance during a work session back in February, Superintendent Dr. Jim White stated that the doctor’s note policy didn’t seem to improve attendance and it increased the amount of meticulous secretarial work.
He added that sometimes a sickness doesn’t require a doctor’s visit which is another reason school officials considered changing back over to their old policy.
Previously, guardians could call in to indicate their child would not be attending school and that would be considered an excused absence. The school board decided to switch back to that policy. However, students are still subject to consequences if they exceed a certain amount of excused absences.
The attendance policy for the 2019-2020 school year was approved when board members met in June.
