Bremen School Board Informed About Potential Option to Improve Access to Mental Health Services

The Bremen School Board met in a special work session on Wednesday, July 26th to identify goals and strategize about potential plans.

Superintendent Dr. Jim White said he emphasized one specific area within the school corporation where he thinks they could make some significant improvements.

He presented information to support a possible operating referendum for mental health.

Dr. White explained “I really want to serve kids to the point where we can actually make them better.” He continued, “We have a number of students who just need more resources than we have and I guess kind of the tagline I’d like to say is I want to go beyond compliance.”

Dr. White said he highlighted some of the areas where the school corporation has room to improve when it comes to providing mental health assistance to students.

He stated, “Right now we have one guidance counselor for one thousand students at our elementary/middle school, we have one nurse for 1,500 students and we have a big need, we have no mental health therapists and I’d really like bring in one or two mental health therapists.”

Dr. White mentioned that all the discussions held during the work session were preliminary and the information presented was for planning purposes only at this point in time.

No official support was attached to referendum idea but members will continue to fine tune their goals and develop plans during future meetings and work sessions.
