The Plymouth School Board considered a resolution to determine significant negative lunch account balances as bad debt when members met last Tuesday.
Business Manager Kandy Tinkey explained that for the 2018-2019 school year, there was a total of $876.93 in negative lunch account balances.
She noted that the resolution presented to the school board members was in line with a board policy that was created from federal guidelines and regulations.
She said that the policy essentially states that bad debt cannot exist within their system so they have to take steps to get rid of it.
Tinkey added, “You have to cover that bad debt as long as you’ve determined that it’s significant and non-collectible.”
She continued, “They have attempted on a few families to collect and they’ve been notified and we’ve tried to work out different things and we just figure there’s a few that we’re just never going to get the funds from.”
She said the school corporation must cover the debt from an account that is not federally funded so they’re planning to utilize the Operations Fund.
School Board members cast a unanimous vote to approve the resolution.
