Unfortunately, accidents and emergencies can pop up at any time and while you can’t control when they happen, you could provide life-saving assistance by being prepared.
June is recognized as National Safety Month and officials from Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion have shared a number of things you can do to help keep yourself and your family safe this summer and all year-round.
Taking safety classes, specifically those that teach lessons about CPR, AED (automated external defibrillators) and other first aid skills can help prepare you for what to do when an emergency strikes.
Officials emphasize the importance of learning how to assist someone who is choking or hurt and knowing when it is time to call 911.
If someone appears to be seriously injured or in danger, don’t hesitate to call for help, even if you are properly trained to handle a situation.
Another way to be ready is to always keep an accessible first aid kit in your home and vehicles.
The National Library of Medicine recommends that first aid kits should contain items that can help in a variety of situations, including a thermometer, tweezers, latex gloves, instant ice packs, gauze, bandages of assorted sizes, and hand sanitizer.
Be sure to check your kit regularly to replenish items that may be running low and to dispose of anything that has expired.
