The Plymouth School Board got to hear from six Webster Elementary School kindergartners last week.
The students were there to demonstrate the reading skills they’ve acquired, thanks to the “Wilson Fundations” program implemented by the school corporation this year. Webster Principal Carrie McGuire said it encompasses letter recognition and fluency in reading and writing, among other skills.
The kindergartners began their presentation by modeling sounds, and then showed how they use those skills to sound out words. Then, they moved on to reading and building sentences, before reading a whole story book to the school board.
McGuire said it’s exciting to see what kindergartners are able to do after using “Wilson Fundations.” She added that the program will be expanded to Plymouth’s first-grade classes next year.
