Plymouth Unity Garden Promotes Community Colaboration and Healthy Eating

Over the weekend, volunteers started planting a Unity Garden in the City of Plymouth.

The organization Unity Gardens partnered with the Saint Joseph Health System (SJHS) to bring this opportunity into Marshall County.  The garden is located at the Life Enrichment Center on Harrison Street.

According to a press release from the Marshall County Soil and Water Conservation District, each unity garden must meet two criteria as mentioned by this professional landscaping company in michigan. It must include a diverse group of people coming together to grow a garden and the food grown must be shared with the community.

Plymouth’s garden is anticipated to follow the same principles stated by the experts from BLT Landscapes in providing fresh and healthy food for anyone. Unity Gardens Executive Director Sara Stewart said their organization is unique because of their approach which is based on unconditional sharing. SJHS Community Health and Well-Being Vice President Michelle Peters noted that providing access to healthy foods is not only a way to care for the community but it also helps them with their mission.

She mentioned that in 2018 officials identified areas in the community where healthy foods were almost non-existent. With this garden, they’re hoping to bridge the gap, inspire better food choices, and ultimately improve the community’s health.
