For the last seven decades, the organization Mental Health America has used the month of May to raise awareness and reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness.
In order help others know they’re not alone, MHA started a social media campaign entitled #MentalIllnessFeelsLike. Individuals are encouraged to use the hashtag to share their personal experiences and to read what others have shared.
In addition to providing a platform for people to speak up, the organization offers a number of resources to help people take control of their mental health.
One of the things they provide online are mental health screenings. Officials note that the MHA’s screening tools provide an anonymous, free and private way to learn about your mental health and to identity if you are showing warning signs of a mental illness.
They emphasize the fact that a screening is not a replacement for a diagnosis but it can be helpful tool for staring a conversation about your mental health with a loved one or your doctor.
Other than the screenings, MHA has a variety of evidence-based tips you can utilize help take care of your mental health. Those tips include developing healthy coping skills, eating well, staying active, getting enough sleep, connecting with others and seeking professional help if it’s needed.
Since everyone’s circumstances are different, each person will require a unique approach to manage their mental health. Having access to multiple resources is a good way to ensure that everyone’s needs are being met sufficiently.
