Five Plymouth High School journalism students were recently recognized at the national level. Student Media teacher Amy Schmeltz nominated a handful of her students for the National Scholastic Press Association’s Honor Roll.

Each student she nominated, including senior student Nicole Keller and juniors Alexa Orozco Bohannon Meadors, Helen Chen and Jessika Cuatlacuatl made it onto the NSPA Honor Roll of Student Journalists.

According to student writer Shaun Frantz, PHS is among three Indiana high schools with students who were recognized for this achievement and only 21 Hoosier students made the list.

Frantz goes onto mention that the Honor Roll of Student Journalists recognizes students all over the nation who have worked on an NSPA member publication for two or more years all the while maintaining a GPA of at least 3.5.

Chen and Cuatlacuatl both work primarily for ‘The Mayflower’, which is the yearbook and Keller, Meadors and Orozco have been working on ‘Ye Pilgrim’, a monthly online digital publication.

Schmeltz said she has been nominating students for this distinction ever since 2009, when both ‘Ye Pilgrim’ and ‘The Mayflower’ become NSPA member publications.

She added that she is proud of the publications’ editors for all of their hard work. She noted that they are truly remarkable students who manage deadline pressure, challenging courses, and busy extracurricular schedules.
