Bremen Boys and Girls Club Director TamSlaven avand Bremen Public Schools Curriculum Director Jill Hassle recently gave school board members an update about the ongoing collaboration between the two entities.
About a year ago, Bremen Schools and the local chapter of the Boys and Girls Club were awarded a 4-year grant through the Indiana Department of Education’s 21st Century Community Learning Centers program. According to Superintendent Dr. Jim White those funds are actively being utilized help students who may be struggling to keep up with their classmates.
He explained, “We received a little over $400,000 for the Boys and Girls Club to partner with us to basically extend classroom activities after school and during the summer to help at risk kids stay at grade-level or move to grade-level.”
Dr. White mentioned that the funds also allowed the program to expand their reach to assist even more kids in the area.
He added, “They also extended range of the kids the Boys and Girls Club will serve down into the 4-year-old range.”
The grant-funded additions have only been in place this year but Dr. White said that preliminary testing has already showed incredible student growth. He said officials are excited to utilize the grant funds to continuing helping students however they can.
