In order to attract and retain substitute teachers, Triton School Board members approved a set of new sub rates when they met Monday night.
Superintendent Jeremy Riffle noted that all substitutes will see about a $10 increase to their pay rate, but the amount they receive depends on their credentials.
Riffle noted, “If they have a high school diploma, that’s just kind of the bare minimum requirement that we expect and then if they have 60 hours of college credit on top of that, they’ll make the higher amount.”
He continued, “If they’re a licensed teacher they will actually get the highest amount and then after 15 days consecutively, they would get their teacher pay.”
Riffle noted that regardless of their level of post-secondary education, all subs must have a valid substitute permit.
According to rates presented to the school board, a sub with a high school diploma will now be paid $75, a substitute with specified amount college credits will make $80 and licensed teachers who serve in a substitute position will make $85 until they exceed 15 days.
Superintendent Riffle mentioned that substitutes who work on an hourly basis were also included in the rate adjustment.
He explained, “Current subs always made the $9.45 but actually we’re bumping them to level zero as if they were hired with zero experience so it’s approximately a $1.50 to $3 pay rate increase per hour for people subbing for those hourly positions.”
The changes were made retroactive to the start of the current pay period which began on January 20th.
