The National Transportation Safety Board is reviewing the Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation’s transportation policies, as the investigation into October’s fatal bus stop crash continues.
According to a preliminary report from the NTSB, a Tippecanoe Valley school bus had stopped to pick up students in the 4600 block of State Road 25 in Fulton County, when a pickup truck heading the other way struck four children who were crossing the road. Three died and one was seriously injured. The report notes there’s no lighting on that stretch of road, but there are “watch for school bus” and “left curve” warning signs.
NTSB officials say they’re still gathering information on Tippecanoe Valley’s student transportation policies, the planning and development of bus routes, and the safety issues with loading and unloading students on high-speed roadways. They’re also looking into two similar fatal crashes that occurred in late October in Georgia and Mississippi.
The NTSB says it’s still working to determine the probable cause, so it can issue safety recommendations to prevent similar crashes in the future.
