A hazmat team was called to the scene of a fire at a metal recycling business in Bourbon Thursday. WSBT-TV says a fire was reported at OmniSource just before 9:00 a.m. When firefighters arrived, they reportedly found three separate fires in various bins containing metals, according to Bourbon Fire Chief Mike Chapman.
Because of the materials involved, firefighters decided not to spray water. Instead, they sealed the bins and left them to burn, until the South Bend Fire Department’s hazardous materials team could arrive to help.
Chapman told WSBT-TV that they were able to put together a plan and empty the bins manually, to extinguish the fire. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
