The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Saturday in many Northern Indiana counties, including Marshall, Pulaski, and Starke.
In Pulaski County, the Advisory goes into effect at 5 a.m. EST on Saturday while in Starke and Marshall Counties, it is anticipated to go into effect at 8 a.m. EST. The Winter Weather Advisory in all three counties will remain in effect until midnight.
Officials with the NWS report that this kind of alert means that periods of snow will primarily cause travel difficulties. Motorists should expect to encounter slippery conditions, snow covered roads and limited visibility.
In anticipation for the conditions, the Indiana Department of Transportation shared some tips for motorists to keep in mind before they get behind the wheel.
INDOT officials report that when there is ice and snow, remember to take it slow. Give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination to avoid feeling compelled to travel
Motorists are also encouraged to keep a safe distance from other vehicles, especially snow plows. You never know when you or someone else may need to brake suddenly and it takes longer to come to a stop on slippery streets.

In addition to thinking ahead before you get behind the wheel, pet owners and farmers should be sure that any outdoor animals are prepared for the anticipated conditions.
If it is possible, bring pets indoors whenever inclement weather is expected.
However, if you have animals that must remain outside, the Humane Society of the United States encourages people to ensure food and fresh, unfrozen water is accessible. Owners should utilize plastic bowls when temperatures are low, as tongues can stick to metal.
Additionally, a dry, draft-free, structure should be nearby so the animals will be able to evade the elements. The Humane Society suggests utilizing water-proof burlap or heavy plastic material to cover any open doorways.
