The 2019 Budget for Triton Community Schools was adopted when school board members met on Monday.
Superintendent Jeremy Riffle noted that in addition to adopting the budget, school board members passed a resolution that would allow him and the school business manager to adjust the funds as necessary. They also approved resolutions that establish two new funds related to the recent state-wide change to school funding structures.
Riffle explained, “There’s a big transition happening from [having] capital projects, a general fund and all of that and it’s actually going into two funds.”
He continued, “Those funds are called the operations fund and the education fund so who gets paid out of those and how you can utilize those monies is probably a little bit more flexible, which is a good thing, however, we’re going to need to use a lot of discipline.”
Riffle said that in order to ensure that an adequate amount of money is appropriated for specific purposes, officials are still creating the budget with individual “silos” in mind for things such as maintenance needs, transportation, and capital projects.
The total budget estimate for Triton Community Schools submitted to the Indiana Gateway for Governmental Units is $9,405,591. That breaks down into a debt service fund of $969,496, an education fund of $5,158,135 and an operations fund of $3,277,591.
