Making sure seniors have a plan beyond graduation is the goal of Plymouth High School’s transcript audit process. Director of Guidance Aimee Portteus, along with four graduating seniors, gave an update on the program to the Plymouth School Board Tuesday.
As part of the process, Portteus said the guidance counselors met with every senior over a four-day period last month. Students review their transcripts and make sure they’re on track to graduate. Once they’re done talking to their counselor, students then have the chance to meet with representatives from local colleges, manufacturers, and branches of the military, among others, to start discussing their next steps.
For those who aren’t on track to graduate, Portteus said counselors give them a plan on how they can finish strong and get their diploma, and the industry representatives help show what they can accomplish if they’re willing to work hard. She added that juniors will go through a similar audit process in November, while scaled-back versions are planned for sophomores, freshmen, and eighth graders.
Counselors are also encouraging students to take advantage of Indiana’s Next Level Jobs program. It allows Indiana residents with a high school diploma to earn a career certificate in one of five high-demand fields tuition-free.
