Starting today, Culver residents and commuters should be prepared for an ongoing road closure on State Road 17.
The Indiana Department of Transportation announced that State Road 17 in Marshall County will be closed between State Road 8 and State Road 10 as crews perform chip sealing operations. The work will begin today and that section of road is expected to reopen by the end of the day on Friday, June 22.
As a reminder, INDOT detours must be on state-maintained roads only. According to a news release, Southbound drivers on State Road 17 will be detoured west on U.S. 30, south on U.S. 35 and then east on State Road 10 back to State Road 17. Meanwhile Northbound drivers on State Road 17 will be detoured west on State Road 10, north on U.S. 35 and east on U.S. 30 back to State Road 17.
Representatives note that chip sealing is done to help extend the life of a roadway by protecting it from moisture, ultraviolet degradation and other damaging exposures. They say in addition to sealing the pavement, chip seal applications reestablish surface friction which improves public safety.
INDOT reports that of the pavement preservation methods employed by the state, chip sealing is perhaps the most cost-effective. Studies reportedly show that every dollar invested in chip seal operations saves $6 to $14 in future roadway costs.
Members of the Indiana Department of Transportation extend their gratitude to motorists for having patience as they complete this integral work on State Road 17.
