Marshall County Unemployment Up from December, Down from Last Year

Marshall County’s unemployment rate has started to head back up from its low point in December, but it’s still lower than the same period last year. Marshall County saw 3.3-percent unemployment in January, according to the latest report from the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, down from four percent the year before. But that is an increase from December, when Marshall County’s unemployment rate was just 2.6 percent.

In spite of a shrinking labor force, there were about 20 more Marshall County residents employed in January of 2018 than there were the year before. Of Marshall County’s neighbors, Starke County had the highest January unemployment rate at 5.1 percent, while Elkhart County continues to have the lowest 2.4 percent.

Indiana as a whole reported 3.6-percent unemployment in January. The national rate was 4.5 percent.
