Making sure kids in foster care have educational stability is the goal of a new policy approved by the Plymouth School Board last week. It calls for Plymouth Schools to enroll foster students immediately, even if they don’t have all the documents that would normally be required, like birth certificate, immunization records, or proof of residency.
The policy also specifies that foster kids will remain in their school of origin, unless it’s determined that’s not in their best interest. In order for that to happen, the school corporation agrees to provide transportation to and from school, even if a child no longer lives in their school’s normal attendance zone. If the child’s school of origin is in a different district, Plymouth Schools would work with the other school corporation to provide transportation.
In other policy action last week, the Plymouth School Board added restrictions on audio, video, and digital recording on school property. Anyone planning to make a recording must now get permission from the superintendent and building principal. Exceptions are in place for public meetings and some other school events.
