Though Halloween isn’t officially until Tuesday, many areas will be celebrating early this weekend. The Indiana Department of Homeland Security has a few tips to celebrate the holiday festivities safely.
DHS reports that children are twice as likely to be killed by an automobile while walking on Halloween compared to any other time of the year. If you’re driving, be alert, drive slow and take extra time at intersections making sure no one is attempting to cross.
Walkers should also use sidewalks when they’re available. If there isn’t one, walk toward the far edge of the street and never cut through yards, alleys or across the road. Utilize crosswalks and be aware of potential oncoming vehicles.
To utilize your kid’s costume to help keep them safe, attach reflective tape and bright pieces to the child’s costume or candy bag. Glow sticks also work well to increase visibility during the darker hours. Also avoid masks, wigs or hats that block eyesight and be sure costumes fit properly and won’t impair movement.
Keep an eye on your kids while you’re out and about. Ask them not to eat the candy until you have a chance to check it. Tell them that if any pieces are opened or not in their original wrapper they should throw it away immediately as it could possibly be contaminated.
Follow these Department of Homeland Security safety tips to ensure your holiday is good spooky fun rather than seriously scary.
