Mary Poppins is coming to Culver tonight. The Maxinkuckee Players’ production of the classic musical opens tonight at the Culver Community High School Auditorium.
Director Thomas Boys says the story of Mary Poppins continues to appeal to all generations. “Well, I think part of it for some people is just the magic involved in it, the magic of Mary Poppins, the different things that she does that are out of the ordinary and kind of supernatural,” he says. “And for other people, it takes them back to their childhood. For people that are older, when the movie originally came out, I think they remember fondly the story and the dances and all the familiar songs that go along with it.”
Doug Nielsen plays Admiral Boom. This is his fifth year with the Maxinkuckee Players. “It’s family. As soon as it ends, we all miss each other,” he says. “But it’s a wonderful time with the people. We try to put on the best show we possible can for the people who come see it, and this year, there’s a lot of magic in the show. A lot of things have been done behind the scenes, and I think everybody will be very excited. It’s a wonderful, wonderful show.”
Tonight’s opening night performance of “Mary Poppins” starts at 7:30 EDT. Additional performances will take place this Sunday afternoon at 4:00; Friday, July 28 and Saturday, July 29 at 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, July 30 at 4:00 p.m.
