The Indiana Department of Transportation will be suspending road work over the weekend to make things a bit easier for Memorial Day travelers. INDOT has asked its contractors to pull back barriers and barricades as much as possible to handle increased traffic. However, some restrictions will remain in place in certain construction areas.
State Road 49 is still down to one lane in each direction between State Road 2 in Valparaiso and U.S. 6 near Chesterton. On I-80 and I-94, drivers may encounter lane closures and lane shifts from Hammond east to Elkhart and the Michigan state lane, due to ongoing road and bridge projects. I-65 will also has some lane shifts in Merrillville and Gary for concrete restoration work and farther south near Fair Oaks for bridge deck replacement.
Those traveling through Central Indiana will encounter lane shifts and ramp closures at the I-65 and I-465 interchange on the south side of Indianapolis due to bridge construction. INDOT traffic management staff will be busy this weekend directing traffic heading to and from the Indianapolis 500. If you’re heading to the race, INDOT recommends that you plan your route ahead of time and designate a sober driver for the trip home.
Anyone hitting the road this weekend is asked to plan extra travel time and monitor road conditions.
Drivers can monitor road closures and traffic alerts at any time via the INDOT Northwest District social media channels: www.Facebook.com/INDOTNorthwest or Twitter @INDOTNorthwest. Or visit http://www.trafficwise.in.gov for INDOT’s TrafficWise Traveler Information Service.
