The Internal Revenue Service is warning tax professionals of an email scam to steal their user names and passwords for IRS e-Services. Recently, the IRS has been asking some tax preparers to re-validate their identity to allow them to continue accessing their e-Services accounts.
But now criminals are sending similar messages by email. Instead of taking users to the actual e-Services website, they link to a fake login page, where thieves can steal their passwords. The subject lines on the scam emails usually say that an e-Services account has been closed, blocked, or terminated.
The IRS says if your e-Services account has been closed and you can’t log in, contact the e-Services Help Desk to have it reopened. IRS officials add that if you’re not sure about an email, don’t click on a link or attachment. Instead, go directly to IRS.gov/eServices.
