Marshall County’s January unemployment rate was higher than the previous month but a bit better than the same period a year ago. According to data released by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, Marshall County’s unemployment rate was 4.2 percent in January.
That’s a 0.8-percent increase from December, but a decrease of 0.2 percent from January 2016. At the same time, the number of people looking for work dropped slightly this past January.
Marshall County’s unemployment rate is still better than the state as a whole, which reported 4.7-percent unemployment. Locally, Elkhart County had the lowest January unemployment rate, at 3.4 percent. Starke County was above the state average, with 6.4-percent unemployment in January.
