Don’t leave yourself vulnerable to the Grinch or other Christmas thieves by sharing too much information on social media about your holiday plans. That advice comes from the Indiana Department of Homeland Security. Spokesman John Erickson says posting information about extended vacations could make you a target for burglars. He also cautions against telling strangers what you will be doing.
While you are away, have a friend or neighbor you trust keep an eye on your home. Also use timers to turn lights or television sets on to give the appearance of occupancy and keep windows covered with blinds or curtains.
Valuable items like electronics should be marked with an identification number that’s unique to the owner in a way that cannot be removed. Before you leave, update your home inventory list and store it in a secure location.
Travelers who are going by car should also pack an emergency kit and check supplies already stored in vehicles. Be sure to bring bottled water, a shovel, sand or kitty litter to use for traction, extra blankets, a hand crank or battery powered flashlight with extra batteries, jumper cables, chargers for all cell phones and mobile devices, nonperishable food and a first-aid kit.
