Slick roads are to blame for a vehicle versus school bus crash in Marshall County. It happened Wednesday morning at 7:10 a.m. on Queen Road north of U.S. 30 in Walkerton, according to the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department.
A John Glenn School Corporation bus driven by Heather Rauen of Walkerton was stopping to pick up a student, according to the incident report. The driver had activated the amber lights as she was slowing down and was ready to extend the stop arm when a vehicle driven by 18-year-old Mason Hatfield of Walkerton slid into the back of her bus.
Hatfield said he tried to stop but his vehicle began sliding on the slick road. He also tried unsuccessfully to steer to the right in order to avoid the collision.
The crash report indicates there were 15 students on the bus, but none were injured. Both vehicles were able to be driven from the crash site. The roadway was slick and packed with snow and ice at the time of the collision, according to the report.
