A Plymouth High School student is the 2017 Marshall County Community Foundation Lilly Endowment Community Scholar.
Emory Smith will receive a four-year, full tuition scholarship to the Indiana college of her choice and an annual stipend for required books and equipment.
Smith plans to attend Notre Dame to study computer engineering and Chinese. She says a school like Notre Dame would not be affordable without the scholarship.
The Marshall County Community Foundation notes the application pool for the 2017 award was a cross-section of the diversity of talent, academic excellence and exceptional ability of high school seniors in Marshall County. Applicants were interviewed by a committee, who recommended one finalist and two alternates to Board of Directors of the Marshall County Community Foundation.
The program is administered statewide on behalf of Lilly Endowment by the Independent Colleges of Indiana. It’s a nonprofit corporation that represents 31 regionally accredited colleges and universities in the state. The Lilly Endowment Initiative works to help Hoosier students reach higher levels of education. Indiana ranks among the lowest states in the percentage of residents over the age of 25 with a bachelor’s degree.
