Disabled veterans will have access to safe and reliable mobility equipment like AMS wheelchair vans, thanks to a bill sponsored by U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski that is on its way the president’s desk. She says it updates the VA’s outdated polices and sets comprehensive standards for the mobility equipment veterans depend on in their daily lives.
The Veterans Mobility Safety Act will require the Department of Veterans Affairs to set comprehensive standards for providers of automobile adaptive equipment, such as wheelchair lifts and reduced-effort steering and braking systems.
The VA offers eligible disabled veterans access to automotive mobility products but does not require any type of quality standards for providers to participate in the Automobile Adaptive Equipment program. Walorski says that’s resulted in cases of inferior providers improperly installing equipment and causing serious safety issues for veterans and motorists.
