A game store may soon be coming to Downtown Plymouth, with some help from a city rebate program.
Steve Carter told members of the Plymouth Common Council Monday that he and Rodney Jacobs recently purchased the building at 118 West LaPorte Street. “The purpose of the game store will be to provide for a retail front with card games, board games, figurines, collectibles, things like that,” Carter explained. “And in the back of the store, we’re going to have a gaming area, and we’ll have standing tournaments for things like Pokemon, Magic Gathering, and so forth, and then it’ll also have like a gaming area for folks that want to come in and do campaigns for Dungeons and Dragons and stuff like that.”
The building most recently housed a martial arts business, while another portion of the structure currently contains a barbershop, which will remain. To help with improvements at the building, Carter requested a Commercial Revitalization Rebate from the city, which provides a rebate of up to 20 percent for exterior improvements. “What we’ve come to you for tonight is some signage on the front,” he said. “We’re going to keep the same basic sign that’s there, but we’re going to replace the guts with LED lighting and put up new signage, obviously.”
Vanadco Signs of Argos submitted the lower of two bids, for a total cost of $1,842. However, Carter also requested a rebate on another $250 worth of materials for mortar, window sealing, and roof work he’s currently doing.
The Plymouth Common Council approved the entire rebate request unanimously.
