Prospective college students and their families can get some help applying for financial aid during a few upcoming events.
Representatives from Ancilla College will be on hand tomorrow at Plymouth High School or next Sunday, Nov. 20, from 2 until 4 p.m. at the Knox United Methodist Church to help complete the FAFSA.
That stands for Free Application for Federal Student Assistance and is used by colleges and universities to determine how much federal and state money you can receive for college based on your family’s income and your GPA.
In past years the FAFSA could not be completed until after Jan. 1, but that has changed this year. Also last year’s family financial data is used to complete the application, so there’s no longer a need to wait until the family’s federal and state income taxes are filed.
Find more information online at FAFSA.gov. Ancilla College Vice President of Enrollment Management Eric Wignall stresses the first F in FAFSA stands for “free.” He says you should never pay anyone to complete the application for you or give you advice as to how it’s done.
Students who complete their FAFSA by March 10, 2017 will also be eligible for various types of state assistance, which can further lower the cost of college.
