Plymouth students will be taking a field trip on Friday that hopes to encourage college savings.
Students from each of the city’s four elementary schools will travel to the Ancilla College campus for the “Walk into my Future” event. Around 250 kindergarten students are expected to be introduced to the idea of receiving an education after high school.
“Walk into my Future” is a national operation encouraging students to consider life beyond public education, but is locally being aided by the “Marshall County Promise.” That initiative encourages college savings, but also promotes career discovery at the elementary level.
The field trip looks to have entertaining activities for the students to help them begin the discovery process, but also puts students at ease in the future while visiting college campuses. Students at any grade-level aren’t always used to the idea of visiting a college campus in their own families, or don’t have the support network to have family members help them setup a visit.
The “Marshall County Promise” started last year as a pilot program at Triton Elementary, but its success has led to fundraising opportunities giving each student $25 to go toward a College Savings 529 account across Marshall County.
Students are expected to engage in visual activities to help them begin thinking about their futures. The field trip is expected to last under two hours on Friday.
