The City of Plymouth intends to place new gateway signage as linked here in the coming weeks, but they needed Marshall County approval prior to construction.
Plymouth City Attorney Sean Surrisi made the proposal to the County Commissioners this week. Plymouth has been busy over the past year or so constructing signs welcoming visitors to the community. Signs have been placed to the west of the city and at the circle drive on Michigan Street already.
Surrisi says the appearance isn’t changing much.
“This is a similar sign to what was placed last year on south Michigan and on Lincolnway on the west side of town near Ozinga,” says Surrisi.
The new sign is expected to be placed in the 11-thousand block of Lincoln Highway just east of the city limits.
Due to the proposed placement of the signage on a Marshall County right-of-way, county approval was first required.
Landowners that may be affected by the sign largely had their issues addressed by the City prior to seeking approval. Surrisi says the sign has already gone through Plymouth’s zoning process prior to approval as well.
“It’s maybe 100 yards outside the city limit, but when you get to the city limit, it’s a little more congested there so it makes more sense for views of the sign to move back a little bit,” says Surrisi.
The City and the county have largely kept maintenance of the sign on the city through an intergovernmental agreement.
A mock-up or addendum to an existing agreement is expected to be proposed in the near future. Construction on the sign is expected to begin yet this year.
