The Plymouth Community School Corporation is looking to promote its schools by starting its own magazine. The first issue of the “Plymouth Pilgrimage” was sent out to area residents last month. The publication features stories and photos about various events and accomplishments at the corporation’s ten schools over the past year.
Superintendent Dan Tyree told the school board Tuesday he’s been getting plenty of positive comments since the corporation decided to add the magazine. “The reason that we did that was probably three-fold,” he said. “One’s it’s just another way of communicating with our parents. Number two, only about 30 percent of our parents have kids in school, and so if we ever get involved in a building project, we want to make sure that those parents who don’t have kids in school know that good things are happening here.”
Tyree said it’s also a way to promote the school corporation to families beyond the immediate area, “We did have it go out farther than our district, so it went into other districts. Some of the calls I got were from parents out of district.”
The “Plymouth Pilgrimage” also gives the High School’s Interactive Media students a chance to gain some hands-on experience by writing articles and assisting with the publication. School board president Todd Samuelson voiced his support for the corporation’s new magazine. “I think it’s nice,” he said. “Not everything has to go out on the Internet. It’s kind of nice to have something you can pick up and look at.”
Tyree says the corporation plans to continue with the effort, possibly issuing the magazine twice a year.
