The City of Plymouth is moving ahead with a few water and sewer projects. On Monday, The Board of Works voted to award quotes for the extension of the Plymouth-Goshen Trail water main and for sanitary sewer improvements at the Plymouth Boys and Girls Club, based on recommendations from Midwestern Engineers.
The quote for the water main extension went to Haskins Underground, which submitted the lowest bid at $511,632. That was significantly lower than one of the other bids received, but Mark Sullivan with Midwestern Engineers said the Haskins met all the minimum requirements. “We had two bidders – which it’s always good to see two bidders down low, so Haskins and Thomas were kind of one and the same,” Sullivan said. “Our estimate – they were about $100,000 under our estimate. Sometimes we’re not always right. Sometimes we estimate high, but our estimate was a little over $600,000, $612,000.”
Sullivan added that since the water main goes through Centennial Park, construction won’t get underway until after the Marshall County Blueberry Festival.
Meanwhile, Thomas Excavating & Welding was selected for the sewer improvements at the Boys and Girls Club, for a cost of $120,853. Sullivan expects both projects to be completed this construction season.
Additionally, Utility Superintendent Donnie Davidson told the board that the city’s ready to move ahead with the replacement of the roof at the Ledyard Water Treatment Plant filter building, “Now that our bids came in at what they did in the Randolph Street [water main] project and the associated water bonds from 2015, we feel comfortable as far as replacing that roof at this point.”
The roof replacement was in the original plans for the plant’s recently-completed renovation project. However, it was removed from the project after the proposed cost was more than double initial estimates. The Board of Works gave its approval to solicit quotes for the roof replacement.
