Congresswoman Jackie Walorski toured Washington Discovery Academy in Plymouth on Tuesday to assess nutrition programs.
The visit was focused on learning more about efforts to fight hunger in Indiana’s 2nd congressional district. About 65-percent of Washington Discovery Academy’s students receive free or reduced price breakfast.
Walorski took the opportunity to learn about the nutrition curriculum and toured the school’s garden. Food from the school is donated to the Marshall County Neighborhood Center. The neighborhood center serves 400 families each month and assist families facing poverty.
The congresswoman is examining ways to reform federal anti-poverty and anti-hunger programs. Walorski is chair of the House Agriculture Nutrition Subcommittee and has held multiple hearings on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP.
House Republicans unveiled their “Better Way to Fight Poverty” plan in June of this year. Research conducted in the 2nd congressional district may be used to aid in decision making as policy proposals come forward.
Walorski on Tuesday also toured the Marshall County Neighborhood Center during her visit to Plymouth.
