A Monday afternoon crash in Marshall County required emergency removal of the drivers by state responders.
The incident occurred just after 3:00 p.m. on US 6 east of Beech Road. According to a report of the incident, a 2006 Ford Fusion was traveling eastbound on the highway and allegedly traveled left of center. Investigators believe that eventually led to the Fusion crashing head-on with a 2002 Ford Explorer.
The driver of the Fusion, identified as 77-year-old Francis Pugh of Bremen, was stuck inside the car and had to be extricated before being flown to South Bend Memorial Hospital. He was treated for injuries to his lower body according to authorities.
The driver of the Explorer, 45-year-old Vassiliy Rematchik, was also trapped inside his vehicle. He was removed by emergency responders and transported to Elkhart for treatment to his legs.
The force of the impact sent the SUV off the side of the roadway and into a field. An investigation is ongoing.
