Troopers from the Indiana State Police Bremen Post are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Kosciusko County. It happened around 6 p.m. yesterday in North Webster and reportedly involved a Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Deputy and a suspect in an armed road rage encounter.
The incident is believed to have started in Syracuse near the Pride gas station on State Road 13. Initial reports indicate two people left the area in separate southbound vehicles, and one fired several shots at the other.
A Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Deputy found the two vehicles involved in the incident in North Webster. A short time later the deputy was involved in a crash with the shooting suspect’s vehicle at the intersection of Main and Huntington Street. The force of the crash sent the suspect’s truck into a brick building on the corner, according to the incident report.
The deputy approached the truck and driver after the crash, and that’s when he fired shots. The circumstances surrounding that encounter are under investigation by the state police.
The pickup truck driver was taken to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash as well as the gunshot wound. The extent of his injuries and condition are not known at this time.
The deputy is receiving treatment for injuries sustained in the crash at Kosciusko Community Hospital.
Neither the names of the driver nor the suspect have been released yet by the Indiana State Police.
