A Chicago man police say used counterfeit credit cards to buy cigarettes at several Plymouth stores is jailed on a $10,000 cash bond following his arrest by Plymouth Police.

A clerk at the Pak A Sak station on West Jefferson Street called the police on July 22 to report a possible fraudulent credit card transaction. Officers found the suspect’s vehicle a short time later and spotted the man walking out of the Family Express on West Jefferson Street.

He was carrying quite a few cigarettes, according to the incident report. Officers spoke to the man, identified as Mene

of Chicago, and say he showed them several credit cards. Whatley also reportedly told the officers he bought the cigarettes with one of the cards and said the data on the magnetic strip did not match the numbers displayed on the card.

Further investigation determined Whatley had used a counterfeit card and bought cigarettes at the Family Express on South Michigan Street earlier.

Whatley faces charges of fraud, counterfeiting and theft. His bond is set at $10,000 cash.
