Marshall County residents have greater access to a potentially life-saving medication, thanks to a standing order from the Indiana State Health Commissioner.
Naloxone is administered to reduce opioid overdose and revive people who might have died without treatment. It’s a non-narcotic medication approved by the FDA to reduce life-threatening respiratory failure.
The medication is available without a prescription at locations across Indiana, thanks to a new law that took effect July 1 to make naloxone available without a prescription at entities registered with the state. That list includes the Plymouth Walgreen’s.
Additionally, officials with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department are trained in the administration of naloxone. It’s available at the jail and is carried in each patrol vehicle.
Indiana State Department of Health Commissioner Dr. Jerome Adams notes people are more likely to die of a drug overdose than in a car crash. He says getting naloxone into the hands of people across the state can save lives and help those struggling with addiction.
